Critical thinking! My 5 yrs old is advanced so I try my best to get the resources that challenge her so she doesn’t get bored. I absolutely love how they set up the questions.

Learn comprehending math problemsIt’s a great book to supplement 2nd grade learning specifically for kids to comprehend problems rather that just solving math statements

Great GuidanceEvery summer I buy workbooks for my two boys. This year I chose Kumon, I purchase the whole collection of Grade 4 for my son going into 4th grade and the whole collection of Grade 3 (thinking Grade 2 would be too easy) for my son going into 2nd grade. Later on I found that my younger son had difficulties in some areas in Grade 3 so I bought Grade 2.This has been a great guidance for my kids and I. The books helped my kids learn step by step and I really do see improvements. Its great for me, I simply use the answer sheet to correct and it helps me find out what their weaknesses are. Overall I really like Kumon workbooks compare to previous companies that I have purchased because I do see improvements. Next year I will purchase Kumon again.

Full of useful exercisesA typical Kumon book full of useful exercises tackling basic math problems. However, it lacks fun activities that endears math to kids who fear it, or want nothing to do with it.
Teacup27 –
Good Practice BookThis book has a large section about length and measurement. We skipped a bit of that so we could practice more of the addition and subtraction. It’s a great workbook to practice math and supplement what my daughter is doing in school.
Lala –
Best math workbook!I purchased all three books on 2nd grade math (Addition, Subtraction and Word Problems) for my daughter when she was at her summer break before entering 2nd grade. We practiced almost every day and by the time she started her classes at school she knew how to add and subtract 3-digit numbers with confidence. These work books are excellent alternative to expensive Kumon classes. It’s mid October and we are almost done with the second grade Addition, Subtraction and Word Problems. She scored above average at her school as a result whereas before she couldn’t add even 1-digit numbers without using her fingers. I’m very satisfied with her progress within such a short period of time. Will continue buying these books.Highly recommended!

Appropriate for a 2nd graderThe math functions themselves seem appropriate for a 2nd grader to me–addition and subtraction with up to 3 digits, that kind of thing. There’s a lot of mix of difficulty for the math involved; a single lesson can have a problem as easy as 5-3 and later on, a problem involving 2 or even 3 digit numbers. For a word problems workbook, I would have expected problems that require more concept-level thinking (what operation is needed here?). The problems provide plenty of repeat practice for basic math functions, but there’s not much mix of types of problems in each lesson, so the student isn’t really required to do much critical thinking in figuring out what approach to use in solving the problem. Once the student solves the first problem or two, the rest of the problems are pretty predictable. I would prefer to have quicker math functions involved if it meant my daughter had to spend more time critically evaluating the path to the solution.

GreatIt’s really helpful. Teaching kids when to use minus and when to use plus. I was a little surprise to see some multiplication in there. 1st grade and 2nd grade didn’t master plus amd minus, multiplication can be a little hard for them. Other than that, it’s a great book.
Raja Balu –
Good for MathI like all Kumon books, especially word problem. My daughter love to solve these word problems instead of just math numbers! Great job in making the problems on the book.
a.r –
Useful and effectiveOverall is good, though level of difficulty is not properly addressed. The problems are defined based on 1 to 3 degree of difficulties, but some of them are really simpler, or few more difficult than the level.Problems are very routine, nice questions, helpful to reinforce my kid word problem solving ability
Hank –
Gr8 word problem and mathThis is an excellent world problem book and slowly builds on the complexity of the questions. It really helps the kids think through and more importantly read through the question.
Amazon Customer –
great resource for childI really like this workbook. The word problems are written in a way that makes the child really think about the answers. Each problem has a different way of asking the same type of questions to get your child thinking about what is truly being asked. It takes a little work on the parents part to skim through each lesson to validate whether the problems are more advanced than what has been previously taught (inches converted to feet, etc.). I really like this book and feel that it is a good supplement to what my daughter is being taught.
BrittLee –
buy it!!!Love this book for my second grader. a very good word problem book.
Pattie –
my student sucked at word problems to say the leastExcellant! When we started using this book, my student sucked at word problems to say the least. We just finished with this and I almost can’t believe how much progress she has made. Will be using Kumon books every time she has a problem grasping a skill!!!!
Chau Edge –
It is a great way to enhance your child’s learningWe started out using Grade 2 material as the actual Kumon program measures and takes a similar approach. It ensures the child has full mastery of the basics. Our son motored through this quickly though given it is self paced. In the course of a year he has moved from Grade 2 to Grade 5. It is a great way to enhance your child’s learning.
Ashley C –
Use as extra workIt’s not challenging but good for extra work assignments
Father of 4 –
Now she feels more confident in her answers and understand why she got the problem wrong and understand how to correct her mistaEast for your child to follow and get more confident with math word problems. This part of math was my daughters weakest section. Now she feels more confident in her answers and understand why she got the problem wrong and understand how to correct her mistake now and making better test scores.

It is a very good workbookIt is a very good work book. My son loves it. This book is a great resource to help your kids if you have time a desire. We use this book as an extra practice to prepare him for school. In terms of skill level it’s fairly well correlated to the public schools curriculum. The repetitive nature of the exercises in this book really helps. We highly recommend it!

Great book for my 2nd grader to practice with at home.We are about a quarter of the way through this book and I really like it. It helps me to keep my son on track with word problems when he’s at home. We do a few pages every other day and it has been working out great! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to reiterate 2nd grade mathematics at home!
Kmatt17 –
Great!I really like this book. My daughter struggles with word problems and these are great for her to practice over the summer. I will keep her doing them until she understands “key” words to know which operation she is suppose to use.

Math Meets ComprehensionMy daughter would get a little impatient when it came to Math and we bought a set of Kumon workbooks for summer practice (including this one). The books are easy to understand/follow and my daughter is a lot more confident with her ability to tackle word problems.

Math Practice Can Be FunMy great-granddaughter was able to work in the book with very little assistance. A small amount of monitoring for accuracy is always needed; however, it was delightful to see her pleasure in doing the drill on her own.

He’s always been a little ahead with this book. But this book has been to difficult for him. I can tell his not ready for it just yet. He’s been doing addition as subtraction grade 3, along with Geometry and Messurement Grade 2, without any problems. But for this one he had struggled a lot. We had to stop doing it, we’ll give it another try when he’s done with the geometry and measurement grade 2.

not badFor my son word problem is somewhat difficult, so I compared a lot of word problem workbooks and online resources. This book is not bad, because it covers all the topics regarding second grade word problem. However, we are not very satisfied with it, as it only provides word problem practice. My son just repeated this kind of practice again and again. Sometimes he was very bored with these exercises, and he really wanted to find something that are interesting as well as efficient. We also found some online resources, such as Beestar.org. It is probably the best among the many learning sites. The worksheets are well-designed and have both time and accuracy targets set for your child to practice. If you are like me, you will be glad to find that sometimes free stuff is even better. When my son takes the online Beestar weekly tests, he often ranks high among his peers. The worksheets are engaging and helpful, and the competition among students makes my son more willing to improve his math skills.

Word problems Grade-2I chose this rating because this book meets my daughters needs and spectations It is exactly what she uses inher second grade class. I would recommend it to any parents looking to help their child as they grow and learn.Word Problemsgrade -2 practice book gives her the confidence she needs to be successful ahead of her peers. thanks.

Kumon momI needed extra math and reading/writing practice for my kids in 3rd and 1st grade. These books are easy to understand, very systematic and kids love it. we take them along in the car even for short drives. It keeps the kids busy in the back seat. would recommend these to any parent that would like their child to excel academically. who doesn’t?? I’ve purhased about a dozen plus Kumon books from amazon already and intend to purchase many more.

Great reinforcement and confidence boosterMy son was having difficulty with word problems at school. The problems started out easy and were similar to those taught at school. This helped build his confidence and experience with word problems. I plan to continue using these books to supplement his school work.

Good wordsIt’s thin. Has word problems but are very easy to understand. My daughter is grade 2, now is homeschooled because the French school she was in sucked (other parents ditched them too now they barely have kids in the school to stay open.) my daughter is smart and answers them well but when it comes to reading and writing on her own she can’t because she learnt nothing from the school and the teachers did nothing about bullies too.
Tiffany zhang –
Love itMy 7 years old daughter really enjoy the book, and like to do it without I request. The book have pictures inside to help her understand the questions better.
Olivia –
good but are the random solutions a misprint?Covers a good variety of word problem with topics nicely divided into clear sections however random pages seem to already have the solution and answers included with the questions in faded font. Not sure if this is deliberate or a misprint.Given it’s just worksheets (mom and dad need to do some instructions), it’s not worth the purchase if you have the resources to research and print math worksheets available on the web where you can easily adjust to a level appropriate for your child for every topic and include or exclude the answers.
Prashanth S –
Very good problem typesA very good book to start doing word problems, I tried with my son , it is helping to be ahead in the class.

Really greatOn the test #15 question #5 is written wrong beside that Im so happy that I purchased this book. my kid already has grade 2 math book that I bought from walmart and grade 2 subtractions from kumon they are great for practices but this book is a must have if you want to keep your child interested in solving math problems as well as understanding why she is adding and subtracting
True –
Great problem solving starter bookLove to complete this book with my child! Great book! It’s grade 2 problem solving for the entire book so yes it is repetitive and that’s perfect to. Often, there are too little of the same problems and children don’t acquire the lesson as they should. Or we have to create our own problem solvings, find them online… 😊
MrsPB –
Would give 5 stars was it for adapted for the UKExcellent book! Only thing I’d say is that I think you need to do all the other maths books for this grade to be able to do the word problems one. This book has a few black-and-white and orangey pictures, but mainly text with little space to work on the word problems. The 36 two-page lessons all have their solutions in the back. Some questions are tricky, so children need to pay attention not only to the information disclosed in the exercise, but the actual question too. They tackle addition and subtraction, length, weight, mixed calculations, tables and graphs and reviews.

A good practice bookKids will begin from easier level, gradually moving to difficult problems. But it moves very smoothly. However some little explanation on what is expected from kids or an easy explanation of the mathematical concept would have been better for kids to self learn and practice.

Good Practice for KS1 MathsKumon Word Problems Grade 2 is an excellent book for my son. The questions were written in a straight forward manner and in simple language. It is a good way for children to apply what they learned in school in different contexts. The only thing I have to say is that this book is tailored for American curriculum and was written in American English. My son found the language in some questions a bit puzzling and required my assistance. American curriculum does not exactly match the UK one. Although this book provides good enough coverage in maths word problems, it could only be used as a supplementary workbook to other workbooks which are based on UK curriculum.

great bookI use this to support my kids math. They attend Kumon classes but don’t do much problem problem solving which I think is important. its a great book especially if your child knows the kumon way of learning but any child could benefit from using it.
