My Book of Simple Sentences: Learning about Nouns and Verbs

(62 customer reviews)

Writing simple sentences can be difficult for young children, as the skill requires understanding the most basic grammar concept: noun-verb agreement. This book makes writing a simple sentence easy by gradually introducing the concepts of ‘noun,’ ‘verb,’ ‘plural,’ and ‘agreement.’ By slowly moving from singular nouns and verbs to plural nouns and verbs, children are finally able to create a simple sentence and build a foundation for creating more complex sentence patterns.

Good Head StartIf you want little Johnny or Jane to get a jump on writing, this book by Kumon is a good way of going about it. It uses a progressive method of teaching about the elements of a sentence, using exercises to build up to writing simple sentences. It’s clear, easy to understand, and as “fun” as something like this can be. My son did a page every night or so and writes (and reads) very well for someone his age. So go ahead and do it — a little education never hurt anyone!

Would like to have tear out pages so my child can …Would like to have tear out pages so my child can work on them one by one. Having to fold back the book it’s a little inconvenient.

It builds a pretty solid foundationI used this book for a summer bridge program for Pre-K – Kindergarten. There is a lot of tracing while introducing children to writing simple sentence structures. It also gives the opportunity for early readers/writers to understand singular nouns and plural nouns, verb/noun agreement and read many new sight words. There is a lot of repetition but, the graphics keep the child’s attention.

Books printed so light you can’t see the wordsThese books are great for education, and home schooling and the company got it right when they wrote these out. They are done very well. The reason I give these books a three, is for the fact that I nor my son can see 75% of the words on the pages. These are words he is supposed to be tracing. It’s hard to trace a word you can’t see, I’m not sure they’re even on there. My other son who has 20/20 vision says they are so light he can barely see them himself. This might have only been a printing flaw but everyone of these that I received were like this. We could only do about ten pages of each book.

I would use this book for handwritingIn addition to learning nouns and verbs, this is an excellent tracing and handwriting book. My son will be entering Kindergarten and I found that a lot of the handwriting books for his age group promotes Large letter writing and by the time your child is first or second grade it is harder for them to break the habit of writing in large letters. I feel if they start off writing letters with smaller print it will help them write neater and fit words and sentences onto lines. If they do it correctly to begin with, it’s not a challenge to learn letter spacing and sizing. THIS IS THE BOOK I WILL BE USING.

How to write sentencesI bough more than 15 Kumon books, and I was usually satisfied those books. However, this book was a bit different, because it has 99% of tracing and only 1% of writing own.It could be a good starting point for little kids – it can teach them when to use capital letters and when to use small letters. However, it could have been better if there would have been more practice spaces without tracing.

GOODGood for my three year old. Already n edd to know phonics and this book can practice sounding out words

  12. Amy Barseghian

Perfect for supplementing at homeI am an educator and love all of the Kumon books. I use this to supplement with our Kg’er who knows all of her letters and sounds but need structured practice on simple sentences. Follow the order of the books and they deliver!

  13. Maxsea5

Good for just completing kindergartenIt’s a good review for 1st grade. A little too much repeating that I think my kids get alittle bored with it.

  14. fairytoes

Great practiceI love this gets her spelling and then using the words in a sentence. She likes it too and wants to practice on her own. I have liked all of the Kumon books that we have purchased. I use them for both of my children

Good resource for Pre-K to KKumon, in general has really nice workbooks. This one I purchased for my kindergartner to reinforce concepts that are being introduced early in the school year. I’d recommend this workbook as a great resource for the summer between pre-K and K.

This is the worst Kumon book I’ve ever purchasedThis is the worst Kumon book I’ve ever purchased. I have used many others and have always been happy. This just 99% tracing words. It doesn’t really teach anything because they don’t have to think about the answer, they just trace what is there. Very disappointed in this one.

I like the contentsLook inside helped me to choose the book. I like the contents.

  30. KRH

Waste of money. Basically overpriced handwriting practice.Complete waste. This book is big on color ink and graphics and short on content. An example: Page 15 is the first of ten pages of plural nouns. There are three problems per page ( ant, ball and swan). There is no add -es work for words that end in x,s,ss,sh or ch.

A Great Learning ToolThe Kumon workbooks continue to amaze me. I purchased My Book of Simple Sentences for my children when they were about 5 and 6. The colorful pictures are able to keep any child’s attention. And, the big lines and texture of the paper allow small hands to feel comfortable even in the beginning stages of writing. The sentences are short and each lesson builds up to the next one. This workbook will help develop confidence in young children, and they are rewarded at the end because they will receive a certificate of completion. In our family, we did an awards ceremony after each book. So, yes I definitely would recommend this product to others.

  49. JASMEET

Decent bookThis is a decent book, nice paper quality and pictures. It starts with singular and plural nouns and then verbs and eventually making 3-4 word sentences. I like it because my son has speech delay and has trouble making sentences and with this book he can do a lot of practice. It is good for younger kids may b 4 years, depending upon kids needs. I got this for my 5 and a half year old son and I liked it.

excellent!very colourful and it’s really for my 5 year old daughter..

  53. donna.t

English home schooling!I bought this to help my son with his home schooling and its quite good but I think the sentences are maybe a bit too easy for a 7 year old as the cover states! The sentences basically consist of 3 words such as ‘the dog runs’ and whilst I believe repetition of simple things can help in this case I think its maybe a bit too easy!

  54. CosInf

Great!Very useful and logical to start your kid learning.

  55. Amazon Customer

Definately recommendBought for my 5 year old really good to introduce nouns etc

  56. N. Chouhan

Expected more from a kumon bookI bought this book so my 5 year old son could form basic sentences but the book focuses more on single words, and tracing them. Not exactly what I had expected from this book, would recommend if you need simple guidance for writing individual words but not if if you are after a book to help you understand how to create proper sentences.Maybe the book should be retitled ‘simple words’?
