Great for introducing subtractionMy 5-year old son started the Kumon math series when he turned just 4. We started from the Numbers 1-120 book and since my son already knew how to count to 100, it was a breeze and we started the “Simple Addition” right after. He then moved on to “Addition” and “Simple Subtraction”. He is now 5 years and 4 months and he is in “Addition, Speed&Accuracy” and “Subtraction”.In general, I like Kumon-series of early math books. For example, “Numbers 1-30” is a great book to introduce numbers/counting, and “simple addition” is a good one to introduce addition, and so on. To avoid boredom (I see many reviewers say this is “too easy”), my personal opinion for is to start as early as possible. For books recommended for “2-3-4” and “3-4-5”, start as soon as your child turns 2 or 3, respectively. For books recommended for “4-5-6” and older, you can even start 1/2 or 1 year earlier than the recommended age range. The key is to complete the earlier books in the same series such as Numbers 1-30 and Numbers 1-120 and Simple Addition (consider them “prerequisites”), and your child will be ready for this one. Also, the first a few pages of this book IS backward-counting which is a nice way to introduce “minus one” and my son did not feel intimidated by starting a “new skill”.

Good beginning subtraction bookWe have used many Kumon practice books over the last year and this is another winner. Our daughter will begin first grade this fall, and I’ve been using this book over the summer to reinforce the concept of subtraction. The book helps young children learn how to subtract the numbers 1 through 5 from whole numbers up to 20.It is organized in an incremental format, beginning with tracing activities, i.e. tracing 1 to 20 and 20 to 1; joining the dots practice which is fun; and, drill type exercises. The drill type exercises can get repetitive and tedious so I would suggest using them according to your child’s tolerance level (we managed four pages a day) so that boredom does not set in. Other than that, this is a good learning/practice resource for simple subtraction. I’d also recommend these other Math titles in the Kumon series for those entering First Grade:Grade 1 AdditionGrade 1 SubtractionGrade 1 Word ProblemsGeometry and Measurement Grade 1

ThoroughToo much for 4 year old. The difficulty was not too hard, but with 30 or so problems on a page she was intimidated. I recommend this highly for older kids who need practice and can understand that you can do some today and some more tomorrow (or just have more stmina).

easy to use!My son finished this book right before starting 2nd grade and found that he was right in line with what his class was learning. He felt confident and accomplished. These books are very easy to use and we mix and match them with other learning materials. There is a certificate of achievement at the end of the workbook for your child. My child just loves to collect the certificates and we reward him with a small toy or a day of fun etc… The positive reinforcement works like a charm. I’m glad to see that Kumon is creating more workbooks for older children. We will definitely continue with this series.

I am a fan of the Kumon workbooks. The …I am a fan of the Kumon workbooks. The paper is always high quality for lots of erasing, the problems are challenging enough for my 1st grader but not too difficult to cause frustration. He enjoys the repetition. The illustrations are very basic but cute enough keep a child’s interest.

Kumon is greatThe Kumon math books are great…our five year old’s math skills have soared. I recommend all Kumon books for parents wanting an extra and unique challenge for their kids that thinks a little “outside the box” of typical American academics. It’s a known fact that kids can learn numbers well before they can learn letters, but most American schools (and families) focus so much on reading and writing at an early age. I think we’re doing it wrong. The ase with which my daughter can do these Kumon books has convinced me of this.

My 5 year old is almost done with this!We like Kumon series.

… 5 year old is using this and it is perfect for teaching him the basic concepts of subtractionsMy 5 year old is using this and it is perfect for teaching him the basic concepts of subtractions. Like with all Kumon books, it introduces new concepts slowly and does a great job with teaching through repetition.

  11. Heather Castle

SimpleDefinitely simple. If you’re looking for a workbook with only subtraction problems then this is the book. No pictures or add-ons. We’ve enjoyed it.

My son gets bored with it veryThe book does its job in teaching subtraction, but it takes a lot of concentration from my son to work on it just because there is absolutely no diversity in tasks. My son gets bored with it very quick

Great for extra school work. This is a great learning and practicing book. It has just the right amount of difficulty for the grade level chosen. What is great about it also is that it is easy to find parallel subjects to whatever your child is learning in school..Comes with answer key that allows you to go back and review wrong answers.

  17. F. Raider

GREAT – totally love it.I totally love this workbook. It works incrementally, simply laid out and totally organized. I am confident that it will work really really well for my 5 year old. Some children might not like it, if they like things really bright and interesting or if they don’t like doing the same thing over and over, however my daughter will really do well with it. I wish there were a few more pictures, otherwise it is fantastic!

Nice book.My little kindergartener works on this work. It’s perfect for him.

  19. S Berry

Great summer practice bookGreat summer practice book. Kids lose so much of what they learn during the summer so these are great for summertime to keep the knowledge fresh before school starts. I do agree with previous comments that it is very simple subtraction.

Great books to supplement school or get kids startedBecause you don’t have to follow any procedure, my 4 1/2 yo granddaughter loves all the Kumon workbooks and eagerly gets them off the shelf even if she only does 1-2 exercises — and often does 10 or so.

  22. Liz

Great book to get ready for kindergartenOnce again Kumon has produced a great book to help your kids get ready for kindergarten. My daughter loves the Kumon series. She has learned a lot with the repetition exercises which can be done in the comfort of home.

Its okThe book overall makes a child remember how to subtract through the repetition. I am not sure whether the child fundamental understands the concept of subtraction. The fundamentals have to be explained first and then this can be supplemented for practice purposes.

Kumon Simple SubtractionI love the Kumon maths program. I wish I’d had access to them during my schooldays when maths was a complete nightmare! Now it’s my son’s turn, and he agrees that Kumon workbooks are fantastic. If you’re not familiar with them, here’s why:They have large, easy to read type. This is perfect for younger children or children who find small type difficult to read.No illustrations in the Addition and Subtraction workbooks. This means the child can concentrate on the exercises. Pictures may make other books look pretty, but if your child is already having difficulty with maths, they can be very distracting. The sums in the early books are repetitive enough for the child to memorise the answers without realising he’s doing so.Each page has just one exercise of twenty questions – no more, no less. The child can therefore do one or two exercises in a reasonable amount of time every day and get a real sense of progression. Each book has 80 pages of exercises, at a rate of, say, one or two pages per day, five days a week, the child has completed the whole book in around ten weeks. This gave my son an enormous sense of achievement. Far better than spending forever doing half a dozen exercises from the same page in the same book, which he found completely discouraging. He was actually motivated to get on to the next book!I recommend Kumon to anyone who wants to help their child with maths. If they are at Primary school and having problems with maths, this would reassure them that in fact maths isn’t that hard. If you are homeschooling, the Kumon program is very comprehensive. Everything you need to know about maths is there. Five stars.I would just add that if you have the Kumon Simple Subtraction it is not necessary to get Grade 1 Subtraction. They cover exactly the same ground. One or the other is enough (unless the child is really struggling a lot and needs double the amount of exercises, but it’s hard to imagine this for most children).

better if has some applications in real lifeThis book is based on the Kumon Method that introduces math concepts in an incremental, step-by-step approach, allowing children to grasp new skills little by little in drills with less challenge or frustration. As a result, children may gain confidence in their abilities and are motivated to learn more. The practice helps your child develop an understanding of subtracting the numbers 1 through 5 from whole numbers up to 20. Children will be able to understand the concept of subtraction by repeatedly tracing and reciting numbers both forwards and backwards and then gradually shifting to subtracting the numbers 1 through 5. You can rarely find a book focusing on simple subtractions this way.My child used this book and found it fun. Although it’s labeled for 6-8 years old, I feel it’s better for 5 years children or slow first graders. It’s indeed very simple. I would like it better if it includes some real life use of simple subtractions, so children know how to apply the knowledge. In this aspect, Beestar free online word problems are wonderful. My child understands subtractions better when using both programs together. Overall, this is a solid book for very young children to start subtracting.

Kumon momI needed extra math and reading/writing practice for my kids in 3rd and 1st grade. These books are easy to understand, very systematic and kids love it. we take them along in the car even for short drives. It keeps the kids busy in the back seat. would recommend these to any parent that would like their child to excel academically. who doesn’t?? I’ve purhased about a dozen plus Kumon books from amazon already and intend to purchase many more.

Really Simple SubtractionMy kids love a good challenge. Recently, I’ve been giving my 4 and 5 year old workbooks to learn how to add, subtract, and to figure out simple geography. After using the Kumon Simple addition and seeing how quickly they figured out counting number and addition, I thought I would give them the subtraction book to work on. I was a little disappointed to see much simple this book really was. The first few pages are number pages. These pages feature the numbers, but instead of having them count up, the kids had to trace them counting down. We skipped all those pages because my kids know their numbers and really didn’t want to bother tracing anything. The next pages are just pages and pages of equations. My kids don’t mind this format, but they ended up getting bored because it’s just page after page of 5-1. 6-1. 10-1. It takes a while for it to get to the -3 point of subtraction. This same problem happened when they were working on the addition book – because the progressions are so slow, this book really isn’t for all kids. If you have a kid who is just learning numbers, or who is really struggling with subtraction and needs repetition, this would be an okay book to go with. Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t for us. We ended up going to havefunteaching.com to print out slightly more difficult subtraction sheets for my son and subtraction sheets featuring pictures for my daughter.

Great workbooksLove these series from Kumon. Got first grade workbooks now. Only thing I wish they would include is another format of math problems rather than just linear ie.) 5-2= but even problems that are stacked 5 -2 ——-Hope this format shows correctly on my comments. But I just show our kids the other way problems can be presented in school

Very good, probably suitable for reception children.I have bought this book for my 5yo twin daughters which started the reception this school year. This exercise book covers the subtraction of numbers 1 to 5 within 20 range (i.e. you go from 2-1 to 20-5). First pages are ridiculously simple, but then after, I think, first 10 pages things go quite difficult.I do not know why Simple Addition (which covers adding 1 and 2 to the base up to, I think, 20) is recommended for 4 years old children, but for this one suggested age range is 6-8. May be subtraction deemed to be inherently more complicated then addition? In my case I found that my daughters can cope with the task soon after they turned 5. For other KUMON books I had to wait until they had reached the upper recommended age range — otherwise the tasks were clearly too complicated for them. What I do normally — on the way to school I ask girls to solve 2 arithmetic problems with progressing difficulty. I do not make difference between adding and subtraction. Once I had noticed they can confidently add/subtract numbers upto 3 I gave them this book. It looks like they did not have much difficulties with it at that point. So, my suggestion is to listen to your child and to decide yourself when you think he or she is ready.

Enjoyed the whole bookI bought this for my 6 year old son during lock down to catch up his Maths during this pandemic. The book is very simple and easy to understand.By the time he reached 3 rd page he was able to pick up the concept and started doing on its own .Will definitely Recommend this book 100 %

backing up what my son is learning at schoolI bought this book because my son was having slight trouble getting to grips with subtractions but the kumon repetition method seems to be helping a lot in as much as now he can do some simple subtractions in his mind without any help or aids and its only been a few weeks! Money well spent!!!
