One of my favoritesThis is a terrific book for early learners. It helps them practice their handwriting with both tracing and writing on their own. The pictures next to each word also help with early reading skills and help them memorize sight words successfully. These books are a great homeschooling resource for younger students and they can work as a supplement for kids who are struggling or as a summer bridge book for kids so they won’t regress during vacation months.

Helps Handwriting, especially in terms of judging size/shape of lettersI love the Kumon series and have purchased many of the tracing, letter, and math books for my daughter since she was 2 years old. She is now 6 1/2. I initially bypassed this book, thinking that if she finished her letter workbooks and already knew how to read (both of which she had), she wouldn’t need this. Instead, I encouraged her to write letters to family members, stories, etc..That was a big mistake. Her handwriting never really improved from writing letters, etc. and often she found those to be a chore because she had to think of what to write. Now, at almost 7, this book is too elementary for my daughter in terms of spelling/reading, but she remains engaged with it because she likes the cute pictures, and her handwriting has improved visibly since using it and she’s only 1/4 of the way through.Things I like: Cute, colorful pictures to engage your child. Begins by having your child trace the letters in varying darkness of lines, so that she gains confidence in how writing the letters is supposed to feel. Then leaves open boxes to help her remember the right size of the letter. For letters that hang down or go up (e.g. “h” or “g”) the boxes even turn into rectangles to guide her accordingly.Overall, I think that this book would be too elementary for most 7 year olds. My daughter will be 7 soon and still likes it, but she could have completed all of the work when she was 5 or even 4. For a 5 year old though (or advanced 4, young 6), this is a perfect continuation from the Kumon letter writing books.

Good practiceMy son started K this year as a young 5 year old (summer birthday). Because school materials are not always consistent with the writing pages, sometimes offering boxes, other times offering actual lines with the middle dotted line and so on, he was having trouble remembering that letters like t, b, f, h are taller than s, a, e. Same thing for letters like p, j and q, that go down below the line.I like that this book offers boxes of the correct height for practice. Tall boxes for an ‘f’ a short box for an ‘o’ and a low box for a ‘g’. I also like that he gets to trace the word twice before copying it. It is very good practice. We always provide a sticker when one side of the page is completed. This makes practice less tedious. All the pages in this book are similar. While I bought this workbook to help with reinforcing letter formation in the context of a word, this helps reinforce phonics as well. For example, in one page he will practice: flag, flat and floor. For this reason, this workbook may be more appropriate for children who can already read a little. This is not our first Kumon book. We have used Kumon for cutting, tracing, upper case letters and now we are using this book and an addition one as well. I really like the consistent practice and the fact that after a while he can sit with a page and know exactly what to do without constant supervision.

Great learning tool.My son is on the spectrum and sitting still and paying attention is not easy for him to do. We have our challenges but we are doing the best we can. Kumon books have been a tremendous help for my son and I. I like that they aren’t too overwhelming for him and the pictures really draw his attention. We are just about done with the writing words book that I purchased for him, and it has helped him form his letters correctly with the boxes provided to write each letter. It has also helped him read. He looks forward to earning his certificate when he completes each book. I have also wrapped up prizes he can pick after earning his certificate which he absolutely loves. I would definitely recommend this to parents for all children.

Great for older kids who need help with foundation skillsI originally thought that this book was too easy for my son, who had already completed first grade, but I got it anyway because although he is very advanced in other areas, he had really struggled with reading and writing through the year. He had gotten into some bad letter formation habits during the school year that I really wanted to break over the summer. The workload was too much during the school year, so I didn’t want to do it then. This book was absolutely perfect and is a wonderful progression from the lowercase letters book. He was challenged, but not more than he could handle.I have no doubt that it would be wonderful for a younger child with average reading/writing ability, but I also recommend it for children, like my son, who needed extra help and reinforcement,

Best snack cups!We just bought another set of these cups for an additional diaper bag – they are easy to use, the kids can use them easily and they are easy to clean. There’s no smell retention and we rarely have spillage issues. Our first set has lasted us for 3+ years, so they are very durable. We always handwash them so that may have something to do with them. Highly recommend for toddlers who want to be independent with their snacks.

I really like the step-by-step format of Kumon workbooksI really like the step-by-step format of Kumon workbooks, so I purchased My Book of Writing Words: Learning about Consonants and Vowels to include in my first grade curriculum. Recommended for students between the ages of 5 and 7, the 80-page full-color workbook builds on the concept of rhyming words and phrases to build more words. The workbook teaches new words grouped by similar sounds and spellings. My daughter completed a page or two a day a few times a week.

Quality material and beautiful artwork that will engage your childI use this book with my 6 year old twin boys who are in Kindergarten. I love the pictures and how the writing progresses from tracing to filling in, to all on your own. My kids are weary of writing many words because they think it might be to hard (they are afraid to fail in front of other kids at school) so this book helps eliminate their fears. I have never seen such sweetly illustrated books as the kumon workbooks! The artwork reminds me of the fun and happy illustrations of the 60’s storybooks 🙂

Great for English learnersI am using this to help my 5 year old transition from a spanish speaking enviroment to a English speaking one. He can read and write in spanish, but struggles to read english. It works wonders because (in my specific case) it helps with vocabulary, reading, and spelling.

This is a great book. It teaches reading and writing wordsThis is a great book. It teaches reading and writing words. Some of the words on one page are draw, dress, drop and drum. On another page the words are jump, camp, bump, and lamp. A Different page has words like lake, take, snake and rake. The words get harder and harder. It is very simple to use Since every few pages you do the same thing just the words are different . It is great to use this book after your child could read simple 3 and 4 letter words.

Astonished!Absolutely love this book! My child has a difficult time with letter formation and as a result has been hesitant to begin the writing process. The step by step printing practice in this book as well as the pictures with the words were an instant hit and the first day my child completed at least 10 pages! I will absolutely be ordering more from the creator of this series.

It helpsMy daughter was having a hard time keeping up with all the other kids in her class and her grades shown it.We wanted to put her through Kumon learning center, but it was not affordable at the time and my wife found these books on amazon. Since my daughter been working in these work books she has improved a lot and her grades have improved in school. If you have time to work with your child and looking at an affordable way to help I would recommend these work books they help.

  21. Britt

  23. svetlana7e

Great book to work on writting skillsI use this book as supplement for my 5 years old. It is great. Not only she learn how to properly read and spell the words, it train her hands to write properly words and letters. I like feature that it is not just words, it has picture for each word and it introduces elements of grammar while training how to write (single vs. plural). I use a lot of Kumon books and love their underlying technique – simplicity and repetition.

  24. Brian M. Lewis

Fun bookThe book is good, but sometimes I think there are too many pictures. I sometimes have to cover the picture as a test to make sure they are reading and not just looking at the picture.

  25. GDSouza

Kumon momI needed extra math and reading/writing practice for my kids in 3rd and 1st grade. These books are easy to understand, very systematic and kids love it. we take them along in the car even for short drives. It keeps the kids busy in the back seat. would recommend these to any parent that would like their child to excel academically. who doesn’t?? I’ve purhased about a dozen plus Kumon books from amazon already and intend to purchase many more.

They are easy to understand in the age group and so fun for kids to do. She gets such a rush of accomplishment. There are so worth it and they are such educational busy work!

  28. JustinTime

Empowering Parents To Help Their Children Acquire Written Language SkillsIf your child is having difficulty acquiring the skills of letter writing, this workbook provides a structured format that not only reinforces learning consonants and vowels, but includes external boundaries, in the form of boxes, for letter size and spacing. As a speech-language pathologist who works on literacy skills with children, I can say that this is a great resource for parents to help their children within the home environment.

It is just okayThis is an okay workbook, could be a lot better. After about 2 pages, my son found it boring. It offers different words to be written three times and every page was the same format. If they offer writing in boxes, writing on lines, fill in the blank and such to make it a bit interesting for the kids, then it would be a lot more helpful.Just because it is a workbook does not mean that it can’t be fun while doing it.

  42. hope

not what i expected.all this book is , is a word with blank blocks in it next to it to help the child place a single letter in a single box. not what i expected.

comment concerning descriptionI have bought several Kumon books and they are, without exception, excellent. The description on the Amazon site is, however, not very helpful. This book, for example, is entitled, “Writing Words” and I expected for it to help my daughter to move from printing words into cursive writing. It does not address that issue at all.

Really awesome book of words – great for both spelling and writingI bought this as a supplement to my kid’s normal school curriculum, to add a bit more and hopefully challenge her a bit more. I have a few of Kumon’s books and so far I have been very happy with all of them. This one I grabbed to help my kid learn how to spell as well as work on her letters. She gets enough workbooks/worksheets that are just repeating one single letter over and over. That gets a but boring and doesn’t really help with learning to put the letters together into words. This book has really helped my kiddo spell while working on her handwriting. The only reason this does not have 5 stars is the boxes… for my kid the lines are better for writing her letters/words than these boxes. The boxes are ok.

A wonderful book for reinforcing word recognition, writing, and spellingMy daughter will begin kindergarten this fall (she is five-and-a-half years old) and she can read quite well (Level 2, some level 3 books) but I wanted to help her improve her spelling skills (she loves to write stories), and this book was perfect for this purpose. The book helps children (recommended ages on the cover is 5, 6, and 7) to say and write words grouped by similar consonant and vowel combinations. There are lots of illustrations to serve as visual guides for readers and the activities are easy and fun to do. There are lots of tracing, writing, and saying out loud activities which all serve to reinforce the sounds of words with consonant and vowel combinations, e.g. “fl”, “pl”, “bl”, “cl”, “cr”, “dr”, “gr”, “tr”, “sl”, “sp”, “st”, “sw”, etc. Recommended!

Great for my 5 year old.Writing Words was so inviting to my 5 year old daughter. She opened it up and knew right away what she was to do, despite the fact that she cannot read and is not that sure of the orientation of her letters. The pages make her curious and she loves to trace and to write the letters in the blocks. These Kumon books are very subtle that way – they are easy and natural without being tricky or cute like many other books. We also love the Mazes and Number Games books.

  82. O. Bakker

Pretty but uselessI like that the images are clear and easily understood, but all my child did was write letters into boxes. After about five pages, I threw the book away. I do not recommend.

  83. Rodrick B.

My son just love itEvery day my 5-year-old who is in the ASD spectrum loves to say and write the double letter in this book.

  84. Holly S.

Probably Not for Five Year OldsBook is quality and pages are in colour. The pages feel decently thick. I like that each page has an area for the child to write their name and date for practise.I feel like this is more of a Grade 1/2 level over age 5. The spaces to write the letters and words are small so it may be difficult but at the same time, I like that it will force them to write the words at a reasonable size. I also like that the work is broken down into sounds (nd, st, ch, th) as this will also help their reading.Well thought out and designed workbook.

Absolute AKufempfehlung

Great Homework Book. Another Kumon Success! This is the fourth book of the Kumon’s Rhyming words series I bought for my 5 year old son. It is based on the Kumon’s tried and tested format of repeat practice i.e. write out the same words again and again and in different pages. The colourful pictures keeps my little one engaged. My son has learned many words since he started working the Rhyming words books and his handwriting has improved greatly. Brilliant.
